Starknet Opens Vote on Studying Independent L1 Transition...Quantum-Resistance Options Under Discussion

Ethereum layer-2 (L2) network Starknet began a vote on October 15 asking whether to conduct further research into a possible transition to an independent, quantum-resistant layer 1 (L1). The non-binding vote, open to STRK holders on Snapshot, will run for seven days. It follows StarkWare's October 8 disclosure that it was considering an independent L1 and is intended to gauge token holders' views.

The rationale behind the proposal is autonomy over security preparations for quantum computing. The proposer explained that Starknet can pursue quantum-resistant development in areas it controls directly, but its Ethereum-dependent bridge and data availability remain affected by Ethereum's timetable for becoming quantum resistant. An independent L1 was presented as an option to reduce dependence on the base chain and improve security on Starknet's own schedule.

The vote does not decide whether Starknet will transition to an independent L1. If the vote passes, research will begin and be followed by a concrete proposal and additional votes. If it fails, Starknet will continue developing quantum resistance as an Ethereum L2. No timetable for a transition to an independent L1 has been presented.

The proposal states that either path would continue to use the existing STRK token and would not involve issuing a new token. It also says the bridge connecting Ethereum and Starknet would remain in place. The current discussion is therefore at the stage of examining whether the network can operate its security architecture independently while maintaining its connection to Ethereum.

Metanomia View

This discussion shows that an L2's security depends not only on its own technology but also on the upgrade timetable of its base chain. Starknet is considering an independent L1 as a way to control the pace at which it achieves quantum resistance. A key issue in future proposals will be how the network can gain greater autonomy over security while maintaining its connection to Ethereum.
